Ai Weiwei wurde am 28. August 1957 in Peking geboren und ist ein bekannter Bildhauer, Konzeptkünstler, Architekt, Filmregisseur, Fotograf und Kurator.

1983 zieht Ai Weiwei nach New York und gewinnt dort Eindrücke von Konzeptkunst und Pop-Art. Diese nutzt er für seine spätere Arbeit, um die Betrachtung von Kulturgeschichte sowie von chinesischen und globalen gesellschaftlichen Entwicklungen anzugreifen. Über Jahre hinweg hatte Ai Weiwei die staatliche Gewalt, ihre Zensur und Korruption kritisiert und wurde mehrfach unter Arrest gestellt. Seine provokanten Aktionen und Kunstwerke bewegen sich oftmals zwischen Bewunderung und Grenze zur Peinlichkeit.

1993 kehrt er nach Beijing zurück und verarbeitet dort seine Erfahrungen mit Pop-Art und Konzeptkunst. Es entstehen Objekte, die sich mit antiken Kunstgegenständen und mit der Kulturrevolution auseinandersetzten. 2005 veröffentlicht Ai Weiwei einen Blog zu gesellschaftlichen Fragen, Kritik an der Regierung sowie Gedanken über Kunst und Architektur.

 

Der Menschenrechtler wurde nach regierungskritischen Äußerungen im Rahmen der Proteste in China 2011 von April bis Juni 2011 inhaftiert und hatte bis 2015 Reiseverbot.

 

„Alles ist Kunst, alles ist Politik“ so brachte der international bekannte Gegenwartskünstler Ai Weiwei das Grundprinzip seiner Arbeitsweise auf den Punkt.

 

Seit 2015 lebt Ai Weiwei in Berlin.
